âSORRY IâM LATE.â MARCO arrived at Salvoâs with a stylish new leather man bag slung over one shoulder. âIâm not usually one for brand names but I couldnât resist this one.â He took his seat, placing the bag carefully at his feet.
âDonât worry, weâve only been here half an hour or so. Just time enough for one drink.â I said, recalling how Salvo had greeted us personally before giving us drinks on the house. âWe met your friend, heâs lovely.â
âYes, he is. It works out mutually beneficial too ... I bring tourist groups here for one of the best views of the city and my loved ones get seats like this.â He opened his arms out to encompass the Duomo, of which the midsection and above were visible over the buildings that lay between the spectacular Duomo and Piazza della Republica, where Salvoâs was located.
It was five in the evening and the first of the squareâs performers were unlimbering. There were four of them; three men and one lady.
âItâs the Firenze Opera Quartet.â Alessia declared. âTheyâre one of my favourites.â
âItâs usually one of the same groups of people who perform.â Marco said. âThey have to pass an audition in front of the municipal council to be granted a license. On top of that, theyâre required to pay eighty euros for every spot they do. So they have to be good otherwise they lose money.â
âThat sounds a bit harsh. Eighty euros is a lot of money.â I said, wondering how they managed to make a living as street performers.
âTrue. But Firenze is all about the tourism. We canât risk allowing some awful dead frog sounding singer scaring the Japanese away. We need their money.â He laughed, I suppose he did have a point.
Salvo arrived and warmly greeted his friend. He was around Marcoâs age and had a similar sort of style to him; in fact, the two of them could have been brothers if it wasnât for Salvoâs shaven head. I noticed the looks he gave Alessia, which bothered me, but thankfully Marco didnât seem to notice. Within a minute, free drinks arrived for everyone and it occurred to me that this was the second night in a row Iâd be having drinks lavished upon me, which also meant it was the second night running that my uncontrollable emotions would be running away with me. It was always a consequence when I drank; I become attached to people, clingy and needy. Most often it was funny and people enjoyed being around me when I was in such jovial moods but here and now, it really wasnât what I needed.
âThey donât serve Vino di Giordano here.â Alessia observed to herself with more than a touch of irritation to her tone. âIâll be speaking to my mother about that.â
I thought sheâd wanted nothing to do with the family business.
Just like myself, Marco picked up on it immediately. âAlessia, why are you suddenly so interested in whether or not some small restaurant in Firenze
